Got a shot of a very nice, very subtle Lancia Fulvia at Leo Carrillo State Beach on my way into town the other day. I like the understated nature of this era of Lancia in general, although the Superleggera pictured below may seem docile at first glance but was the most impressive car I shot at the 2006(!) Motor4Toys show:
Its body design is very similar to the Maserati 3500 GT, perhaps with a little less baby fat and more finesse in its design. I've always been a sucker for sports coupes- my first car was a 1973 Fiat 124SC. I owned it for about a year before the rust became noticeable and within two years I'd sold it and moved on to (ahem) a Ford Escort. I would have traded the Fiat's rust and agility for the pig-slow acceleration and overall unreliability of the first-year escort, but it ran more of the time than the Fiat.
At the most recent Motor4Toys there was a nicely restored Lancia being shown. I'm not overly fond of the color scheme, but it was a beautiful car nonethless.
The owner had a 1-Euro note tucked into the ashtray. Nice touch....
Among my biggest fears in life (even bigger than waking up one more to discover that I have a wardrobe consisting solely of Tommy Bahama and Dockers clothing) is that I'll win the lottery one day and wind up blowing it all on Italian sports coupes in need of resurrection (much less restoration). I could probably do worse.
It's always nice to see and go back to these kinds of cars. It can't compare even to the modern cars of today when it comes to something that you love from a Lancia Fulvia.
